Selecting Hearing Aids

Hearing Aid

Technology

Modern hearing aids are tiny, high tech marvels providing a customised sound experience by amplifying exactly the sound you have been missing. They offer many advanced features that enable you to hear even in the most challenging situations.

There is a wide range of hearing aid technology on the market; from entry-level models with basic technology to premium models with the most sophisticated technology to optimise speech clarity and sound quality in the wide variety of life situations you might find yourself in and a more personalised sound.

Every person has unique hearing needs. There is no “one size fits all” answer to hearing loss. When deciding on a hearing aid it is important that the technology is matched to your hearing levels, individual lifestyle needs and cosmetic preference.

Basic Technology

Some of the basic features of most hearing aids include:

  • Multiple channels – more channels offer the ability to fine-tune the hearing aid’s amplification response (frequency response) to your exact hearing loss
  • Feedback management – eliminates feedback (or whistling) as it happens for a comfortable listening experience
  • Volume control – enables the hearing aid’s volume to be adjusted quickly and easily depending on where you are. After all, a library is different to a concert!

Advanced Technology for Challenging Situations

Advanced Technology for Challenging Situations

Advanced hearing aids use directional microphone and noise reduction technology to improve your speech clarity in challenging situations, whether it’s indoors in a busy restaurant or outside playing golf. Available technologies include:

  • Automatic and Adaptive directionality – in background noise the hearing aid focuses on who you want to hear by cleverly switching from an all-around mode to a directional mode (focusing to the front) automatically reducing background noise.
  • Super directionality – in high noise situations the hearing aids activate a super directional system that provides a narrow sound beam to the front of you reducing noise from all other directions
  • Wind noise reduction – reduces the unpleasant sound of wind noise when you are outside or driving in the car with an open window
  • Transient noise reduction – provides a comfortable listening experience for you by eliminating sudden loud noises such as a door slamming, cutlery dropping.

Advanced Technology to Enhance Personalisation

Advanced hearing aids automatically adapt by identifying the specific acoustic environment you are in and adjusting the hearing aid’s settings to optimise sound clarity and quality. For example, if the hearing aid identifies music it will transition to a setting to enhance the quality of the music.

Other technologies to enhance personalisation include:

  • Trainability – you can fine-tune the hearing aid to your specific needs in your everyday listening environment and over-time it learns your preferences and applies these automatically
  • Remote Controls – to give you ultimate manual control over your hearing aids, dedicated remote controls or smartphone apps can be used to control your hearing aids

Accessories for full control and connectivity

There are many accessories available to help you get the most out of your hearing aids and stay-tuned. These can include:

  • Bluetooth Streamers stream audio from connected Bluetooth-enabled devices directly to your hearing aids. Receive crystal-clear sound from your phone, television or music player.
  • Smartphone apps that really personalise your hearing aid experience. What looks like texting is actually you making adjustments to your hearing aids.
  • Remote controls to give you ultimate control over your hearing aids enabling you to discreetly adjust the hearing program and volume of your hearing aids.
  • Chargers that can be used to recharge compatible batteries saving you money and helping the environment.

Hearing Aid Styles

Think hearing aids are big, bulky and ugly? Think again! Modern hearing aids are available in a range of sizes and styles from models that are virtually invisible, to models that are so stylish you would not care if people caught a glimpse.

Different styles have different features and some may be more appropriate for your needs than others. At the Hearing Place we can discuss your requirements and explain which styles are best suited for your needs.

Invisible-In-Canal (IIC) & Completely-In-Canal (CIC)

Tailor-made for your individual ear anatomy these styles are extremely small and discreet, often virtually invisible. They are suitable for mild to moderate hearing loss, but may not be suitable for all ears due to their size.

In-The-Ear (ITE) & In-The-Canal (ITC)

Tailor-made for your individual ear anatomy these styles are still quite small and discreet, but are visible from the outside. As they sit just inside the ear, they can be easier for people with limited dexterity to manage. They are suitable for nearly all levels of hearing loss from mild to severe and they can accommodate sophisticated technology.

Receiver-In-Canal (RIC)

Receiver in canal styles are a discreet yet powerful solution. The unit sits behind the ear with a slim wire leading to the receiver which sits directly in the ear canal. The housing is tiny and when on the ear is virtually invisible. This style can provide high levels of amplification and is suitable for nearly all levels of hearing loss from mild to severe. Receiver in canal hearing aids can also accommodate sophisticated technology.

Behind-The-Ear (BTE)

These style are very popular and are available in a wide range of sizes, including micro-discreet styles. The unit sits behind the ear with a tube leading to a custom mould or tip within the ear canal. They can accommodate sophisticated technology and are suitable for nearly all levels of hearing loss from mild to profound.
